I had an NEC OEM shipped by Dell. After a few coasters, I researched the reasons why. Unlike DVD+R discs, the DL discs work only with specific drives and specific firmwares. If you use NEC, you need 2.18 version. You can easily upgrade your firmware by going to NEC site.
Once you fix that, these discs work like a champ. More affordable than other DLs.
Just an addition after several months of using the dual layer: Once in a while you will come across Memorex DVD+R DLs that are defective. It would copy fine but when you try to play it (even on the computer), it will give an error message. Although Memorex offers lifetime warranty, I have not been able to get through to customer service. After a week of sending them a message, no response.
If you want to play any dual layer media to play on your home DVD player, you need to set the booktype to DVD-ROM. This advice is not specific just to Memorex. You need to do that with all brands.

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner Review

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner
Average Reviews:

The Phillips DVDR3505/37 has the best "digital tuner" picture quality out of the two other DVD recorders that I have tested with "digital tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The Phillips DVDR3505 produces an amazingly clear OTA digital picture on my old 27 inch Sanyo analog "box" TV using an indoor antenna. The Phillips 3505 and the 27inch TV are connected with regular "composite cables". The resulting OTA digital picture is amazingly detailed and clear with little or no annoying "dot crawl". Another important feature for me in selecting the Phillips DVDR3505 is that it allows you to choose "4.3 pan & Scan" to view OTA digital programs in full screen on a "box" TV (no black bars caused by "HD" OTA programs). In the 4.3 pan & scan mode the OTA digital picture is shown in full screen but is not distorted looking (no long and stretched faces) and the picture framing matches the full screen picture seen on my analog OTA TV in a side by side comparison. In addition the picture clarity/sharpness in the "4.3 pan & scan" full screen mode is superb! The same effect should be achieved when watching a purchased or rented "widescreen" DVD movie on your "Box" TV in the 4.3 pan & scan mode. The cons for the Phillips DVDR3505 are its slow channel change and slow recording set up. One additional problem I have experienced is that the unit looses its channel set up under certian conditions. At this point in my life, the quality of the picture that you see from your cable, Sat, or OTA programs is what is most important to me and my family when watching TV. The truth is that I have put up with poor reception using analog TV with "rabbit ears" antennas long enough, so the amazing picture quality of the Phillips is what sold me. The Phillips DVDR3502 wins hand down in that category and is the main reason that I sent the other more expensive feature rich DVD recorders back to the store. My family and I have been able to work around or forgive all of the "cons" reported about for the Phillips DVDR3505 and because we are basic users the Phillips meets our needs for recording OTA TV programs while providing a "Wow factor" in picture clarity when watching "real time" OTA digital TV through our analog "box" TV. Also, a "Wow factor" is achieved even when watching OTA digital program recorded on DVD using the Phillips DVDR3505. Image reproduction is excellent in two highest image recording modes. Before buying see if the features on the Phillips DVDR3505/37 matches your basic needs. If viewing pleasure has been lacking for OTA broadcasts then get ready to receive the "Best Picture" award from friends and family when using the Phillips DVDR3505.

Nortech Media 10.2" Portable DVD Player Review

Nortech Media 10.2 Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, so I bought this DVD player about a year ago, right? Well, I am finding out from my kids that the battery hasn't been working in months! I tried charging the battery overnight and sure enough, the player worked for maybe 10 min. and quit.
I googled "Nortech portable DVD player" in several different ways and all I found were tons of links to people with the same problem, searching for help. Nobody, including me, can find the company anywhere. I tried going to Dolby Laboratories b/c I saw their name on the back of the player, and there is nothing at all on their site about this dvd player.I e-mailed them about the problem and will update this review if I get anywhere with them.
So, in the meantime, like all the other people I read about when I googled "Nortech DVD player", I now have a portable DVD player with a defective battery. And no place to get it fixed or replaced. What a rip off.
I bought our player at Samsclub when the price was reduced from $189 to $139. Should have bought a more reputable brand.

Samsung DVD-M201 DVD Player Review

Samsung DVD-M201 DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this player on a recommendation and am very pleased with my purchase. Although it depends on your criteria, I think this is a very good buy.
I don't have an amazing entertainment system. I cannot judge its capabilities in that area (although there is an obvious improvement over video). I wanted a DVD player because I am a movie buff and I love the extras. And that's what I got. It is easy and hasn't given me any problems.
The only thing (and this goes for all DVD players, I found out) is that you might require another piece of equipment before you can get it to work. Look at the back of your TV. If you only have one antenna spot, you need to buy an RF modulator too. Just a little tip that I didn't know about.
In summary, I would recommend this player. Be warned, though, because it causes a hysteria where you feel you must watch WAY too many movies!

The Samsung DVD-M201 DVD player is an affordably priced model that features state-of-the-art composite-video outputs, a slim design, and a dual-laser pickup. The dual-laser design, which employs separate laser diodes for DVD and CD playback, enhances video and audio quality and extends format compatibility to CD-Rs and CD-RWs. The player's Spatializer N-2-2 sound circuit simulates surround sound through your TV or stereo speakers, while its 96-kHz/24-bit audio converters deliver pristine audio quality from DVDs and CDs. The back-panel Toslink optical and RCA coaxial terminals each pass a 96-kHz/24-bit audio stream for use with the latest high-end audio recordings (though be aware that your receiver must be able to decode your 96 kHz recordings if you use a digital connection there). The DVD-M201 includes left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic receivers and, in case you don't have a receiver yet, TV inputs. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel formats through its digital outputs for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver or an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC). In the video realm, the M201's 10-bit video DAC ensures precision playback of high-resolution DVD signals. Analog video components are also selected to optimize performance. Composite video output terminals provide the optimum connection between the DVD-M201 and an advanced direct-view or projection TV system. The unit also offers standard component- and S-video outputs.

JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-Ray Disc and HDD Recorder Review

JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-Ray Disc and HDD Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will try to give anyone interested in this unit some important informa to consider. It did not work for me at all, but it might work for you. To begin the unit is marketed by JVC but I do not think it is their original product. The unit comes in a basic box with no company advertising on it. It does say JVC on the unit but on the menu screens during operation make no reference to JVC at all. It looks very much like the TASCAM Blu-Ray recorder and I would guess it is the repackaged same unit.
First the unit will record to BD-R and BD-rewritable formats as well as DVD-R and RW (not DVD+R or RAM). It will read from +R discs. It is copy protected so if you think you can duplicate store bought DVDs and BDs, you can put that thought to rest....you cannot. All material must go through the HDD first. There is no direct recording to blank media. This is not a bad thing as you can do editing when the title is on the HDD. The unit has several recording modes for High Def and Standard Def. It has NO flexible bitrate modes so you must use the standard modes. For example, for HD recording it offers modes of 2 hours / 4 hours or 6 hours on a 25g disc. The times modes are the same for SD. You can do direct dubbing from a disc to HDD as long as it is copy protected. This means you can dub your TV recordings of CSI to the HDD. It will re-encode the material at the mode selected, for instance SP for 2 hours (SD). This would be a very good thing if you had commericals recorded and you wanted to remove them and then dub the edited title to another disc. You can do those kinds of edits. If your original recording had chapter marks they will appear in the same spots on the HDD dub so you can remove them and input them where you want, or delete portions of the recording, give it a title and select a thumbnail image that will appear on the final menu. These things are pretty nice options.
This is where my problem with the machine came into play. First it has no COMPONENT INPUT, so for me recording HD could only be done from a HD video camera, which I do not own. My cable TV HD box has only a component output but no HD-DV output, which is what this unit requires for HD dubbing, so I could not dub recorded HD to this machine. I could have lived with that.
On page 28 of the manual it gives recoding lengths for each recording mode and how they apply to each recording format. For example, if you record a title in the SP mode, which is 2 hour on standard definition 4.7g DVD-R it would translate to 10.5 hours on a 25g BD-R. To any reasonable person this would imply that this machine could actually put standard defintion on a BD-R? It cannot. If you record in standard definition you must dub it to a DVD-R or RW. It cannot be dubbed to BD-R. So why tell the buyer that you can get 10.5 hours of standard definition on a BD-R disc, when this machine cannot do it. I do not know, I tried to ask JVC and got no response.
This is what happens if you try. I wanted to take all 14 Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and put them on 2 BD-Rs in standard definition. Using page 28 as a guide, I did my math and they would fit easily with an hour to spare on each disc. This would be using the SP mode for standard definition. First I had to dub them from the original discs which I recorded off TCM. I had one disc per movie recorded at approximately 7.2 mb/s which is a high birate and would be re-encoded to the SP level of 5.0 but this would mean very little actual loss of image quality. The encode in real time. I did all 14. I should have done one and tested it. It would have saved me 20 hours.
The actual dubbing process went smoothly and all 14 titles were nicely stored on the HDD. I did have to pick the thumbnail images for each and input titles, which is horribly difficult on this machine compared to DVD recorders from Panasonic and Pioneer. After completing this, I inserted my first blank BD-R, only to see the message, disc is incompatible. I had purchased 20 GIGABLOCK discs on Ebay as they were the only ones I could find that said they would work with this unit....they do not. I went to Bestbuy and bought a three pack of Verbatim at $15. The machine recognized that disc and formated it. So stay away from cheap discs in this unit. I followed the dubbing from HDD to BD-R instructions and when the unit detected that a BD-R was inside, I got the message, titles will be dubbed in HD qualty only. I could not change this. I thought well let us try. I selected the first title to be dubbed and received a message that read "some titles cannot be dubbed). This is all it said, just some titles canot be dubbed. This message does not appear anywhere in the manual. No matter what title I selected no standard definition title could be dubbed to a BD-R disc. I put in a standard DVD-R and it would have dubbed it with no problem. I checked in the manual under record mode convertion thinking that I could somehow tell it to do what I needed done, afterall the page 28 graph, said a BD-R could hold 10.5 hours of SD on a disc. But I found that only HD titles on the HDD can be converted down to SD, so you can take a high definition title and put it on DVD-R but it is re-encoded in the mode to fit on the disc.
So that is it for me on the unit, I hope it helps people make a decision. It was a horrible mistake for me, but luckily I had a 15 day return policy to protect me, so I am only out shipping cost. If your HD cable box has a HD-DV output or you want to put your HD videos from your camera on disc, this unit may be very good for you. It just did not work for me. A word of warning even on some of that, as I understand it, many HD broadcasts have copy protection built it which allows only one copy of the material. For this unit that would likely be the transfer to the HDD, it then may not allow dubbing to disc, unless it was converted to SD.

Coby KTFDVD1093SVR 10.2-Inch Under-the-Cabinet DVD/CD Player with Digital TV and Radio, Silver Review

Coby KTFDVD1093SVR 10.2-Inch Under-the-Cabinet DVD/CD Player with Digital TV and Radio, Silver

My first impression of the Coby Under-The-Cabinet TV/DVD player is that it is flimsy and cheap. The screen is a bit loose and just doesn't feel like it's put together all that well. I'm afraid that one of these days when I'm putting the screen up or down that it's going to break so I have to be very gentle with it.
Now with that said, it has a pretty good picture when watching TV and an "OK" picture when watching a DVD. Don't know why it would be different, but it does seem to be. Maybe it's the DVD's optics. The sound is GREAT when watching TV, but I had to crank up the volume all of the way when I was watching a DVD. Oh, and there's no headphone jack on this. Yes, where I have this mounted I would like a headphone jack even though MOST people who buy one of these really wouldn't care.
OH, and it's REALLY a 10.2 inch, not 10. Amazon needs to change the description.
All in all it's a pretty decent unit. I'd recommend it.

LG DR1F9H - DVD recorder Review

LG DR1F9H - DVD recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got a refurbished unit almost a year ago for a good price. I was very satisfied with the purchase.
I mostly use it as a DVR (with DVD-RAM disks) and watch DivX movies on it ocasionally. Both of the features work great. I was pleased how clean and easy to use the menu system is (compared to my previous DVD player). I also liked the remote a lot. Every feature I tried worked well, no glitches or substandard quality. The recording quality is great, and I was even able to watch the recordings on a DVD-RAM disk on a PC. I also liked the time-shift mode, when you can watch the file you are recording and skip comercials, etc.
If there isn't anything wrong with the unit there is only a few things I could wish for. First of all, the interface is rather slow. Not a big issue if you are planning to use it as a DVD player/recorder, but I also planned to use it as my main TV tuner to watch TV programs. Unfortunately, it can take up to a minute, or more for it to start up (especialy if there is a disk inside) and during that time you can't watch TV programs at all. Also, it takes about half a second to switch between channels. Again, not a big issue, but can get annoying when flipping through the channels.
One of the features I miss a lot is a USB port for flash drives. Also, it doesn't let you watch movies from SD cards, just pictures (and maybe play mp3s, not sure though). I have to burn my DivX movies on CDs in order to watch them.
Also, the small cooling fan on the back of the unit is quite audible when it is on (which is almost always). I think cooling the unit could have been done better (quieter).
Now to the issues I had with my particular unit. After several month of rather light use it started having problems reading (and recording) DVD disks. The issue was worst with DVD-RAM disks, it would some times not recognize a perfectly good disk at all, and the issue was getting worse over time. Since my warranty was long gone, I decided to open the unit up. The DVD drive in it is very similar to a typical IDE drive you can find in a PC (the mountings are a little different and there is no face plate). So I just replced the drive with a DVD-RAM burner from my PC and, amazingly, everything worked perfectly (even though it was a NEC drive, not LG). All features worked fine, the problems were gone and it even got somewhat faster (although, a bit noisier). The noise is not an issue, though, it only spins up during start up. During playback and recording it is still very quiet.
