I happened to catch a great Amazon sale on this item and so I ordered two of them. I'm only sorry I didn't order four of them [if only to have additional S-video with attached audio cables on hand] because the normal price as I do this review is right up there. These cables are double-shielded and the 12 foot length allows plenty of line if you want to move attached to the TV devices around. The picture quality is excellent! Having said that, see my next paragraph which may place some readers into the old Zzzzz-Land nod but it's based on my own 'trial and error' experiences with trying to get the best possible picture quality on my big screen TV's --and-- attached to the big screen DVD machines.
I'll try for the short version but make no promises! I use a satellite system [** Amazon gets fussy when you mention satellite company names] but when I first got my big screen TV, a 57" wide screen 16:9 SONY, I was disappointed in the picture quality I was getting as it looked 'graney' to me and when I mentioned that to a friend, his first question was, "what are you using for the 'video' connection?" and when I responded that I had a combination of 'composite' RCA cables and those usual thin A/V 75 Ohm cables, he says, "Two to one, that's the problem ... try a quality S-video cable" and I did where the change was 'so' dramatic in picture quality, I couldn't believe it! Crystal clear pictures! And get this, just as an 'experiment' when I learned how to properly connect this stuff [see the next paragraph!], I borrowed a 'component' video cable set [5 wires on each end and pricey stuff!] and I honestly could not tell the difference in picture quality between the rather pricey 'component' cable and the S-video cable yet the S-video cable over the previous 'composite' stuff was like night and day!
Anyway, the trick is knowing how to connect this stuff! So there I am with the TV still on the classic 'Channel 3' thing but I now connect the S-video cable with its 'required' left/right audio cables and I wait for the result -- well, to quote my old 'Big Apple' neighbor, Sid W., many years ago, to wit, I got "bupkis" -- nothing! A blank screen! That's because when you begin using S-video or the even more pricey 'component' cable, the 'channel 3' setting of the TV has nothing to do with it! You 'must' go to your specific TV remote control and find on the remote where it says [and each remote tends to be different] "INPUT" [for my Hitachi big screen] or "TV/Video" [on my SONY big screen] so that when you press that button control on your remote, the TV can 'find' the S-video or component cable [if you opt for component over S-video] signals! Most of the newer sets have up to ==4== "inputs" on the back of the TV and you have to use the remote so that the TV can 'locate' that particular input! Get it? In effect, once you stop using that screw-in 75 Ohm cable [if your TV even has that to begin with or the 'yellow' color coded RCA 'video' plug cable] and move to S-video or a 5 wire 'component' cable or even HDMI for that matter, you have to let the TV know where the signal is! You do that via the remote control!
So here is the set-up: One S-video cable with accompanying audio cables going from the satellite box into the back of the TV S-video slot plus the required audio leads [usually red and white color coded] and then the DVD or as I have a 'combo' DVD/VCR machine, a 'second' S-video cable and accompanying audio cables going from the DVD S-video slot into the 2nd back of the TV S-video slot and the system is ready to go! Then take the remote control and press "INPUT" or "TV/Video" [or however your TV remote changes the video source] until the TV finds the signal. That otherwise 'Channel 3' setting thing is ONLY useful when you use the screw-in 75 Ohm AV cable but when you move to S-video or a component cable [you know, that "Y-Pb-Pr" labeled stuff + 2 more audio cables [total:5 wires] ] or the even newer HDMI cable, 'then' you must essentially direct the TV, via your remote, where to find the signal!
Finally this -- even newer TV sets use a HDMI cable and this is good because with the HDMI cable, the audio is built in to the HDMI cable! But even here, you have to 'tell' your TV via your remote where the signal source is! Why do I go into all this? Easy! Fiddling with these connections and then sitting there while the TV is set to 'Channel 3' and getting absolutely nothing until it dawns on me that there is no signal on Channel 3 until the TV is directed via the remote control to go to the 'updated' S-video, component or HDMI signal source. And this too -- know your remote control and what 'all' those buttons do, you know, the classic of classics, to wit, "when all else fails ... read the manual!" Doc Tony
