(More customer reviews)I installed this device in my 2006 Toyota Sienna XLE. Previously I was using a Sirius Sportster with FM modulator, wired in line with the Antenna. After installing an Alpine overhead DVD unit, I wanted to have both sources ran in via AUX inputs, not 2 FM modulators (I have read that the Alpine has limited volume via FM). Installation was extremely easy, I plugged in RCA connectors between the overhead and AUX1 on the aPAC unit. I used the 3.5mm connector for the Sportster.
According the owners manual "Press the AM/SAT button to switch to AM then again to switch back to SAT. Immediately turn the TUNE KNOB to scroll through available sources. Once AUX1 is displayed, press PRESET 3 to select it. Selecting between AUX1 / AUX2: If you are currently in AUX1 or AUX2 mode turn the TUNE KNOB to cycle through the available sources. Once AUX1 or AUX2 is displayed on the screen press PRESET 3 to select it."
I followed the instructions, however if I want to switch, I have to press the AM/SAT button twice, then roll the knob and press 3. Minor inconvenience, but still frustrating. If you don't push 3, it will make the switch, but it takes several seconds with an audible thump at the switch.
My Sportster still has a built in FM modulator, even though I discontinued use of the in-line device. The sound volume and quality is BETTER ON FM than using the AUX device. There is a noticeable background noise and lack of detail in the music - Like you might get if you compress a song from CD to MP3 using terrible software.
List on this device is near a buck fifty, I paid under eighty from Amazon. I have a request into PAC-Audio tech support. I don't want to discontinue use of this device, I worked too hard to install the DVD and fish the audio cables to abandon their use.
Ultimately, this device is genius by design, but is coming up short on performance. I CAN HEAR my Aux sources without using FM modulators. It isn't like I can't get the volume loud enough, but my factory Head Unit is nearly all the way up (which adds to the distortion).
There are many variations of this product for other vehicles, GM/Ford/Nissan etc. Perhaps this is isolated to Toyota, maybe I have a defective unit, maybe there is a firmware fix.
If you buy this unit. Double check the performance BEFORE you put your car back together.
